GAAPTUS was not built from theory.

GAAPTUS was founded by Peter Madara, who brings over two decades of experience spanning the Big 4 and corporate accounting leadership.

 

Peter began his career in Big 4 audit, where he developed deep technical rigor and discipline. He later went on to lead technical accounting within a Fortune 500 environment, gaining enterprise‑level perspective on how policy, controls, and financial reporting function at scale.

 

But the experience that ultimately shaped GAAPTUS came inside a rapidly scaling middle‑market operator: Shentel, then approximately $200M in revenue.

During a period of significant growth, the company experienced a SOX material weakness in CapEx accounting. Leadership responded decisively. Rather than outsourcing the issue, they embedded ownership. They appointed a technical accounting leader and made that individual directly responsible for CapEx accounting.

 

Peter stepped into that role.

 

It was uniquely immersive, combining:

• Leadership of company‑wide technical accounting

• Direct responsibility for closing property, plant, and equipment

• End‑to‑end redesign of capitalization processes

 

It meant living inside the capitalization cycle:

• Reviewing thousands of transactions

• Overseeing more than $100M of annual CapEx

• Working directly with operations, engineering, and technology teams

 

Owning the full lifecycle—policy, process, controls, and journal entries—creates a level of visibility that cannot be replicated through sampling or advisory distance. It reveals the subtle points where CapEx quietly defaults to OpEx.

 

Through immersion, patterns emerge. And once those patterns are seen from the inside, they can be identified quickly and corrected with confidence.
